Real Madrid stay in title race with Barca thanks to Guler's goal
Arda Güler’s composed first-half finish handed Real Madrid a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Getafe on Wednesday night, keeping their LaLiga title challenge alive and narrowing the gap with leaders Barcelona to four points with five games remaining.
Barcelona had tightened their grip at the top of the table with a 1-0 win over Mallorca on Tuesday, placing pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s side to respond. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute, when Güler curled in a precise strike from the edge of the box, marking a standout moment for the Turkish midfielder.
With one eye on Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Barça, Ancelotti opted to rest several regulars, including Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Luka Modric, Antonio Rüdiger, and Eduardo Camavinga. Kylian Mbappé, meanwhile, was sidelined with an ankle injury sustained during Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final loss to Arsenal.
Despite the rotation, Madrid controlled much of the game but failed to convert several chances to double their lead, leaving the result in doubt until the final whistle. Getafe’s deep, disciplined five-man defense frustrated the visitors, though Madrid’s attacking duo of Vinícius Júnior and Brahim Díaz continued to pose problems. Vinícius saw two efforts saved by Getafe goalkeeper David Soria and set up 18-year-old Endrick for a golden opportunity that was denied by a last-ditch clearance from Djené.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Madrid dictating the tempo but struggling to find a second goal. As legs tired late on, Getafe threatened on the counter. Mauro Arambarri squandered a golden chance in the 72nd minute, misfiring from close range after a setup by Borja Mayoral. In stoppage time, Thibaut Courtois was called into action, producing two crucial saves to deny Omar Alderete and Juanmi.
The win lifted Real Madrid to 72 points, comfortably ahead of third-placed Atletico Madrid—who have a game in hand against Rayo Vallecano on Thursday—but still trailing Barcelona.
It was Madrid’s first set of consecutive wins in a month across all competitions, and Ancelotti will be hopeful that his squad can maintain this momentum heading into a crucial Copa del Rey final.
