Australia's struggle for existence today

Australia is under a lot of pressure after losing to Zimbabwe. They have no room for mistakes. If they lose to Sri Lanka in Pallekele today, they may not be eliminated from the tournament on paper, but they will have to perform a miracle to go to the Super Eight.

So if they lose today, the World Cup will almost be over for the Aussies. Their last match is against Oman on February 20. And Sri Lanka, who won the last two matches, will come to confirm the Super Eight. Even if they lose today, the Sri Lankans will have a chance. Then they will have to win the last match against Zimbabwe by a big margin.

Even after winning the title, for some invisible reason, Australia's dominance in the T20 World Cup is not very visible. However, they have absolute dominance in the ODI World Cup. They are also one of the top teams in the world in any condition in Tests. Australia is in a very bad situation in both the batting and bowling departments in this World Cup.

In the last match, Australia's bowling was able to take only 2 wickets from Zimbabwe. Australia's pace bowling has been weakened by injuries to Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, but star legspinner Adam Zampa has also been bowling quite simply in this tournament. Even then, can Australia not chase 169 runs? That too against Zimbabwe's bowling! Their batting has lost its edge due to captain Mitchell Marsh's injury. World-shaking T20 specialists like Josh English, Travis Head, Tim David, and Glenn Maxwell are completely out of shape.

The good news for Australia before this life-or-death battle is that captain Mitchell Marsh has recovered. Although he did not practice yesterday, there are indications that he will play today. If Mitchell plays, one of Glenn Maxwell or Cameron Green may be left out.

There may be changes in the Sri Lankan XI as well. They can replace leg-spinning all-rounder Dasun Hemanth with pacer Pramod Madhushana. There are also rumours of playing Charith Asalanka to boost their batting strength. Top-order batsman Kamil Mishra's position in the XI is also likely to change due to his form. Kusal Perera could get a chance in his place.
