New Zealand comfortably beat Afghanistan in historic match

Despite a substantial total of 182 runs at Chennai's 22 yards, Afghanistan was unable to secure their final defense. New Zealand commenced their T20 World Cup campaign with a 5-wicket triumph, highlighted by an impressive batting display from Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips.
Afghan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Gulbadin Naib's explosive fifty enabled them to establish a formidable score within the allotted 20 overs. Nevertheless, despite an initial struggle in their run chase, the Kiwis managed to turn the tide and claim victory.

Afghanistan's batting did not begin well. They faced pressure early on as Ibrahim Zadran (10) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (27) were dismissed quickly. However, Gulbadin Naib, who came in at number three, altered the course of the match with a counteroffensive. He formed a 79-run partnership with Sediqullah Atal (29). Gulbadin delivered a remarkable innings of 63 runs off just 35 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes. Ultimately, Afghanistan achieved a challenging total of 182 runs in the designated 20 overs, aided by contributions from Darwish Rasooli (20) and Mohammad Nabi's not out 10 runs.

Chasing a target of 183, New Zealand faced a significant setback in the second over. Before the Afghan bowlers could make an impact, Rachin Ravindra was dismissed, and Finn Allen managed only 1 run. However, Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips quickly alleviated the pressure. They initiated a counterattack for the third wicket. Phillips contributed a brisk 42 runs off just 25 balls, while Seifert anchored the innings. This wicketkeeper-batsman played a stellar innings of 65 runs from 42 balls, featuring 7 fours and 3 sixes. Mark Chapman added 28 runs to the total. In the end, Daryl Mitchell (25*) and Mitchell Santner (17*) remained unbeaten, securing the team's victory.
