T20 World Cup saw a hat-trick on the first day

The 2026 T20 World Cup began on Saturday. The first hat-trick was seen on the first day. Romario Shepherd took a hat-trick to give Scotland a hard time. West Indies defeated Scotland by 35 runs in the Group C match in Kolkata on Saturday.

In this match held at Eden Gardens, Shepherd took four wickets in five balls in the 17th over. Scotland's hopes of winning were shattered in this over. He took the first hat-trick of the tournament. Shepherd dismissed Matthew Cross, Michael Leask and Oliver Davidson. He finished with 5 wickets for 20 runs in 3 overs.

Earlier, Shimron Hetmyer played well with the bat. He scored 64 runs in 36 balls. West Indies scored 182 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs on the strength of his innings.

Scotland started well in chasing the target. After 13 overs, their score was 114 runs for 3 wickets. Captain Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce were at the crease. The pair added 78 runs for the fourth wicket. Berrington scored 42 runs. Bruce scored 35 runs.

Then the match turned. First Jason Holder struck. Then Shepherd's devastating spell saw Scotland all out for 147 runs in 18.5 overs.

Scotland won the toss and elected to field. Their bowling was controlled at the start. Brandon King scored 35 runs. In the seventh over, he hit Safian Sharif for a six and two fours.

Then off-spinner Lisk bowled captain Shai Hope. He scored 19 runs. King was out in the next over. This was Davidson's first T20 wicket.

Then Hetmyer came in. He hit six sixes. He put on 81 runs off 37 balls with Rovman Powell. Powell scored 24 runs. Hetmyer completed his fifty in 22 balls.

Later, Hetmyer was dismissed by Sharif. Brandon McMullen took a great catch at long on. Sharfane Rutherford was dismissed on the next ball. He scored 26 runs. Brad Curry took 2 wickets for 23 runs. Windies scored 182 runs. The Caribbeans managed this capital well with Shepherd's bowling.
