Who will face whom in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup?
The lineup for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup has been finalized after the thrilling Super Eights. Host India defeated West Indies in the last high-voltage match of the Super Eights at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and became the last team to secure a ticket to the semi-finals.
Earlier, Pakistan and New Zealand were in a fight to survive in the semi-finals. Pakistan would have reached the last four if they had won against Sri Lanka by a certain margin. But despite winning the match, Salman Ali Agar's team had to leave the tournament in disappointment after failing to match the desired run rate equation. After the Super Eights, the four teams that got tickets to the last four were South Africa, India, England and New Zealand.
There was a lot of criticism in the cricket community about the grouping of the Super Eights based on rankings before the start of the tournament. However, the lineup for the semi-finals was finalized based on the teams' on-field performance and results. According to the rules, the champion of Group-1 will fight against the runner-up of Group-2. And the opponent of the runner-up of Group-1 will be the champion of Group-2.
According to this equation, in the first semi-final, the undefeated champion of Group-1, South Africa, will face the runner-up of Group-2, New Zealand. On the other hand, in the high-voltage second semi-final, the opponent of Group-1 runner-up, host India, will be the strong champion of Group-2, England.
The final schedule of the semi-finals at a glance:
First semi-final: New Zealand vs South Africa (March 4, 7:30 PM, Eden Gardens, Kolkata)
Second semi-final: India vs England (March 5, 7:30 PM, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai)
