Bangladesh defeated Pakistan in a tiebreaker in the final

Trailing 2-0, Bangladesh's aspirations of reaching the final appeared to diminish. However, a last-minute goal in extra time dramatically equalized the score at 2-2, leading to a tiebreaker. Bangladesh secured their place in the final of the SAFF U-17 tournament today by overcoming Pakistan 8-7 in the penalty shootout. They will face India in the final on September 30, following India's 4-2 victory over Nepal in the first semi-final.

Bangladesh's coach, Saiful Bari, made a strategic decision to substitute goalkeeper Nahidul Islam and bring Alif Rahman Imtiaz onto the field just before the final whistle at Thimpur Changlimithan Stadium. The Bangladesh goalkeeper successfully saved the eighth penalty taken by Pakistan's Abdul Ghani during the shootout. Subsequently, Ashiqur Rahman scored the decisive penalty, propelling Bangladesh into the final. Notably, the two goals that revived Bangladesh's hopes in the match were scored by substitutes, highlighting the effectiveness of Coach Saiful Bari's substitutions.

For Pakistan, the defeat was particularly disheartening, having led by two goals. They had scored a total of nine goals in three group stage matches. Pakistan took the lead in the 32nd minute against Bangladesh with a header from Shahab Ahmed following a corner. In the 60th minute, a penalty was awarded when a Bangladeshi defender handled the ball in the box, allowing Abdul Rehman to convert it easily, making the score 2-0. Bangladesh's substitute Mithu Chowdhury reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 75th minute, and in a dramatic turn of events, substitute Mohammad Manik equalized in the third minute of added time, effortlessly passing the ball to a teammate in the box.

Bangladesh had not won either of their two group stage matches, suffering a 1-0 loss to India and managing only a 1-1 draw against the Maldives. Following this draw, their advancement to the semi-finals was uncertain. However, with the Maldives losing to India by a significant margin (3-0), Bangladesh's fortunes changed. Today, they crafted a remarkable comeback story, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the semi-final and ultimately celebrating victory in the tiebreaker.
