FIFA has imposed a two-match suspension on the Argentine goalkeeper during the World Cup qualifying matches.
Argentina's soccer association (AFA) announced on Friday that FIFA has imposed a two-match suspension on goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez for the upcoming South American World Cup qualifying matches in October.
As a result of this decision, the 32-year-old player will be ineligible to participate in the round-robin matches against Venezuela and Bolivia scheduled for October 10 and 15.
In a statement, AFA indicated that FIFA's disciplinary commission took action against Martínez due to incidents that occurred during two World Cup qualifying matches against Chile and Colombia earlier this month. The specific incidents that prompted the sanction were not detailed by the soccer governing body.
Martínez was involved in a controversial moment when he made an obscene gesture following his team's 3-0 victory over Chile, positioning the Copa America trophy near his genitals, reminiscent of his actions after the South American team celebrated their World Cup triumph in Qatar at the end of 2022.
Additionally, he was reported to have slapped a local cameraman following Argentina's 2-1 loss to Colombia in Barranquilla.
