Manchester United's Fernandes made an unconventional choice to address inquiries following his red card incident against Spurs.
Bruno Fernandes expressed his belief that he did not warrant a red card for a challenge on James Maddison during Manchester United's Premier League loss to Tottenham on Sunday.
The United captain received a straight red card in the 42nd minute at Old Trafford.
“Nobody wishes to be sent off; it is an unpleasant experience,” Fernandes remarked, having made the uncommon choice to participate in post-match interviews after his expulsion. “I did not go in with my studs. This should never be classified as a red card. Even James Maddison acknowledged upon rising that it was not a red card.”
Fernandes seemed to lose his footing while attempting a tackle in Tottenham's half, subsequently raising his foot and making contact with Maddison's shin in a studs-up manner.
Referee Christopher Kavanagh promptly issued a red card.
“If this constitutes a red card, we must reevaluate numerous other incidents,” Fernandes stated. “It is a foul, but there is minimal contact. If he (the referee) opts to give me a yellow card, I would accept that. I fail to comprehend why VAR did not prompt him to review the incident on the screen.”
