Sports advisor asked Shakib to clarify his position
Shakib Al Hasan has two identities. First of all he is a cricketer, better to say the best cricketer of all time in Bangladesh. Secondly, he is a former Member of Parliament of Awami League. Shakib was elected Member of Parliament from Magura-1 constituency in the last January 7 election.
But after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the August 5 student coup, Shakib's identity as a member of Parliament was lost. Shakib is now just a cricketer again. But does Shakib himself think so?
Shakib must make that thought clear if he wants to play the last Test of his career at home in the upcoming series against South Africa. Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan gave the same message to him in response to a question from journalists at the Ministry of Labor and Employment today.
The sports advisor said, 'I think he (Shakib) needs to clear his place, from the political place. It is necessary to talk about his political position. Mashrafe bin Murtaza seems to have already spoken on the matter. If there is a security risk from the public, no one can actually provide that security. Sheikh Hasina also could not be given security. He had to flee the country. So I think it is necessary to clear the political issue (of Shakib) from that place.
Talking about Shakib's security as a player, he said, 'Shaqib Al Hasan has two identities, we have to remember that. One identity as a player, another is his political identity. He was elected member of parliament from the panel of Awami League. People have mixed reactions to these two. Now, as a player, it is our responsibility to provide security to one of our players, we will definitely give it. When he comes to the country, we will provide it. He further said that the state is obliged to provide security to every citizen and they will provide it.
Although Shakib was accused in a murder case in Adabar police station, Asif Mahmud indicated that he would be soft on Shakib.
However, if the people of the country are angry with Shakib because of his political identity, the sports advisor also commented that Shakib has to mitigate that anger, 'I have five police constables and a gunman for my security. If 10 crore people are angry with me, will these 5-6 people give me security? In that case, if the people have any anger, I have to reduce it with my words.
A source close to Shakib, however, said that he strongly believes that at least he will not have to be subjected to the harassment of spectators on the field of play. Shakib is also confident that he will be able to say goodbye to Test cricket by winning the hearts of the fans once again at the Mirpur Sherebangla Stadium. His concern is in one place - whether he can finish the game back home and return to his family in the United States! Since there is a case in his name, if he is detained at the airport!
