The Madrid soccer derby was halted due to objects being thrown onto the field by Atletico fans.
The city derby featuring host Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid was halted on Sunday due to Atletico fans throwing objects onto the pitch.
The referee paused the Spanish league match and directed the players to their locker rooms around the 70th minute at the Metropolitano Stadium, with play resuming after a delay of over 15 minutes.
Real Madrid had just taken the lead in the match with a goal from Éder Militão, who celebrated near the sideline in front of the Atletico supporters.
Madrid's goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, brought the situation to the referee's attention regarding the objects—such as lighters—being hurled onto the field.
Atletico defender José María Giménez and midfielder Koke Resurrección approached the fans in the section behind Courtois’ goal, which is typically occupied by the more fervent Atletico supporters.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone also made multiple appeals for the fans to exhibit proper conduct.
A notification on the stadium's loudspeaker indicated that the match would be paused for 15 minutes, with a warning that it would be suspended if the issue persisted.
This interruption occurred one day after the Spanish league announced its intention to request police intervention against the organizers of a social media campaign, which the league claimed was designed to incite racist behavior towards Vinícius Júnior during the derby.
