The most expensive trip to Spain for football fans

Spectators play a crucial role in the vitality of the game. However, attending matches often requires significant sacrifices from the audience, particularly in terms of travel expenses and ticket costs. This is especially true for fans of the opposing team, as the host or organizing bodies tend to set ticket prices at their discretion.

In this context, Spain stands out as the most expensive destination for soccer fans traveling within Europe. This finding has emerged from a study conducted by FASFE, an organization affiliated with Spanish football.

FASFE has meticulously tracked ticket prices for visiting supporters across European football for two consecutive seasons. The analysis focused on two types of tickets: those for domestic league matches and those for domestic cup competitions.

Spain's premier domestic tournaments, La Liga and Copa del Rey, were compared with the visiting clubs in the leading competitions of England (Premier League and FA Cup), Germany (Bundesliga and DFB Pokal), France (Ligue 1 and French Cup), and the Netherlands (Eredivisie and KNVB Beker). The study's findings regarding ticket prices for visitors have recently been published in a comprehensive report.

In the 2023-24 season, La Liga fans are required to pay a minimum of €34.44 (Tk 4,610) for each ticket, reflecting a decrease of 68 cents compared to the previous season, 2022-23. The next highest ticket prices are found in the English Premier League, where tickets cost €25.74 (Tk 3,430). Additionally, tickets for the German Bundesliga are priced at €13.11 (Tk 1,747), while the Dutch Eredivisie charges €11.62 (Tk 1,548), and the French Ligue 1 has tickets available for €8.52 (Tk 1,135). The ticket prices for the Italian Serie A, another prominent European league, have not been disclosed by FASFE.

This arrangement is viewed positively, especially considering the slight reduction in ticket prices from the previous season. The 17 clubs in La Liga have agreed to offer 300 tickets at €30 (Tk 4,150) for visiting fans. However, individual ticket prices have surged, with high-profile matches such as El Clasico and the Madrid derby commanding prices as high as €179 (Tk 23,926).

In Spain's second-tier league, ticket prices for visiting supporters have also risen. The price increased by 41 cents from €18.67 to €19.08 (from Tk 2,494 to Tk 2,549) last season. General ticket prices have been raised from €15 to €20 (from Tk 2,004 to Tk 2,272), and the highest ticket price has escalated from €35 to €40.85 (from Tk 4,676 to Tk 5,558).

As the Copa del Rey is a knockout tournament, the two teams meet only once before the semi-finals. That is, a team has to play as a visitor. According to the study, the price of each ticket for traveling spectators from the first round of last season's Copa del Rey to the last sixteen was set at 37.5 euros (Tk 5 thousand 16). Last season's final was held at the La Cartuja stadium in Seville. The lowest ticket price for that match was almost 3 times higher than the final of the 2022–23 season.

FASFE also reported that La Liga is the most expensive ticket for traveling spectators among the top leagues in Spain, England, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Second tier league ticket prices followed. And the cheapest ticket for the Copa del Rey final is also more expensive than the cup-level competition in those countries.
