Tottenham made a successful return to European competition after a one-year hiatus, defeating Qarabag 3-0 in the newly formatted Europa League on Thursday, despite facing an early red card.

Defender Radu Dragusin received a red card in the eighth minute for fouling Juninho, who was on a clear path to goal. Nevertheless, the home team managed to take the lead just four minutes later.

Brennan Johnson scored with an angled shot, marking his third goal in as many matches. Pape Sarr extended the lead early in the second half with a goal from a corner kick, and Dominic Solanke sealed the victory with a rebound in the 68th minute.

“The red card was not ideal; we started off quite poorly, but the response afterwards was commendable,” stated Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou during an interview with TNT Sports. “We aimed to maintain a high press, even with only ten players on the field.”

Johnson had also found the net in a 3-1 victory against Brentford in the Premier League and scored a stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 triumph over Coventry in the English League Cup just three days prior.
