Will Smith scores twice as Sharks rally past Blackhawks
Will Smith achieved his inaugural NHL goal and followed it up with a second to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 comeback victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. Alex Wennberg also contributed a goal for the Sharks, who have now secured three consecutive wins for the first time since the middle of the previous season. Mackenzie Blackwood made 26 saves, successfully stopping all 12 shots he faced in the third period, during which the Blackhawks dominated and aggressively sought the equalizer. Ryan Donato and Tyler Bertuzzi found the net for the Blackhawks, who have suffered five losses in their last six games. Petr Mrazek recorded 26 saves, while Connor Murphy provided two assists.
With the Sharks trailing 2-1, Wennberg equalized just 90 seconds into the second period. Mrazek managed to stop a long shot from Fabian Zetterlund but failed to secure the loose puck, allowing Wennberg to chip it into the net for his second goal of the season. Smith's second goal, scored shortly after the midway point of the second period, gave the Sharks their second lead of the night, ultimately serving as the game-winner. He executed a powerful wrist shot into the top corner during a power play.
Despite controlling the play in the third period, the Blackhawks were unable to beat Blackwood again, even with a power play opportunity in the final 79 seconds.
The excitement began early in the game. Smith, selected fourth overall in the 2023 draft, made his ninth NHL appearance memorable by scoring at 6:52 of the first period. After receiving a pass in the left circle, Smith delivered a top-corner shot for a remarkable goal.
Donato quickly leveled the score just 37 seconds later, seizing a loose puck in the slot and firing a short-side shot for his sixth goal of the season, marking his fourth goal in a three-game span. Bertuzzi then put the Blackhawks ahead 2-1 only 50 seconds later by converting a rebound while positioned in front of the net.
