West Indies cruise to victory over inexperienced England in ODI series opener

Was not in the West Indies ODI team for more than three years. Last week in the match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, he played an innings of 102 runs off 61 balls. Evin Lewis continued that streak against England last night.

Lewis single-handedly dismissed the visiting English in the first of the three-match ODI series at the Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua. Played an innings of 94 runs off 69 balls. He hit 8 sixes in the innings, but only two sixes in the entire innings of England.

West Indies beat England by a big margin of 8 wickets on Lewis' batting day. Batting first, the English made 209 runs. The Caribbean reached the modified target with 55 balls to spare in a rain-hit match.

West Indies' start in the run chase was abysmal. Lewis and Brandon King scored only 9 runs in the first three overs. Lewis started the aggressive batting by hitting John Turner for a six off the last ball of the fourth over. Then they started beating Jafra Archer, Sam Curren and Adil Rashid. In the 14th over of the innings, Lewis' personal fifty was completed with 46 balls. However, when the West Indies run was 81 for no wicket in 15 overs, the game was stopped for an hour when the rain fell. The new target for the Caribbean stands at 157 runs in 35 overs. Both the openers brought the target within reach. By the time King caught Livingstone's delivery for a personal 30 runs, 118 runs had gone up on the scoreboard. Lewis, however, was on his way to a century. However, when Rashid was 6 runs away from the century, Lewis became Bethel's catch at long-off, stopping the innings of 94 runs. Before losing the toss, nobody could play a big innings for England. All of the first six batsmen played at least 27 balls, but none of their innings crossed fifty. Maximum 48 runs came from the bat of captain Livingstone. Jacob Bethel scored 27 runs.

Gurakesh Moti took 4 wickets with 46 runs for West Indies. Matthew Ford, Jayden Sills and Alzari Joseph took two wickets each. The man of the match was recognized by the left-hander Moti.

The second ODI of the series is tomorrow. Brief Score:

England: 209 in 45.1 overs (Livingstone 48, Curren 37, Bethel 27; Moti 4/41, Sills 2/22).

West Indies: (target 157 in 35 overs) 157/2 in 25.5 overs (Lewis 94, King 30; Livingstone 1/32).

Result: West Indies win by 8 wickets (DL Method).

Man of the Match: Gurakesh Moti.
