Herdman steps down as the head coach of Toronto FC in the wake of the Canada drone controversy.
Toronto FC coach John Herdman has stepped down in the wake of the Canada Soccer drone controversy at the Paris Olympics, which recently resulted in the dismissal of Bev Priestman as the head coach of Canada's women's team. Herdman, who previously served as the head coach for both the men's and women's national teams, has been implicated in findings from an independent review that revealed a "practice of conducting surreptitious surveillance of opponents" within the national program prior to the Paris Games. Although the Major League Soccer team did not provide a specific reason for his resignation, Canada Soccer indicated earlier this month in their summary of the independent review that they had "initiated a proceeding with respect to Mr. Herdman under the Disciplinary Code."
The summary, released on November 12, noted that "potential violations of the Canada Soccer Code of Conduct and Ethics by the former head coach of the men's national team were identified." Herdman led Canada's women's team from 2011 to 2018, achieving bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, before taking charge of the men's team from 2018 to 2023. He managed the men's national team during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 before joining Toronto FC in August 2023.
The 49-year-old, originally from Consett, England, expressed in July his belief that such surveillance practices did not occur during his tenure. "I have made the difficult decision that it's the right time for me to step away from the club, as the organization defines its vision for the future," Herdman stated in Toronto FC's announcement on Friday. "It has been an honour to wear the Toronto FC crest and contribute to the growth of the club. Working with this dedicated group of players and staff has been a true privilege. I want to thank (president and chief executive officer) Keith Pelley and MLSE ownership for the opportunity, and I also want to thank the incredible fans for the support they’ve shown me both on and off the pitch. I wish the organization success going forward, and I look forward to the next chapter in my career."
