PSV Eindhoven expressed gratitude towards its American internationals following their Champions League match on Wednesday.
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the 87th minute at home against Shakhtar Donetsk, the prospects appeared bleak for the Dutch side clad in red and white stripes until their American players made a decisive impact.
Malik Tillman executed a clever free kick from a wide position, catching Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk off guard as he attempted to cover his near post.
Just three minutes later, Tillman struck again, unleashing a powerful shot from outside the penalty area that equalized the score, prompting PSV to seek further goals.
The winning moment arrived in the fifth minute of stoppage time when US forward Ricardo Pepi capitalized on a loose ball in the goal area, calmly placing it into an empty net.
“When we scored the winner, it was absolute chaos; everyone was jumping on each other, our bench erupted, and our fans were ecstatic,” remarked Ryan Flamingo of PSV.
“For such a moment to occur in a Champions League match is truly exceptional,” added the Dutch defender.
This remarkable comeback propelled PSV six positions up the 36-team standings, surpassing notable clubs such as Real Madrid, Juventus, and their domestic rivals Feyenoord, landing them in 18th place, just below Manchester City on goal difference. The top 24 teams will advance to the knockout stage after three more rounds by the end of January.
