Southampton denied by VAR and Brighton rises to second in Premier League

Southampton was deprived of a valuable victory due to a contentious VAR decision, resulting in a 1-1 draw against host Brighton in the English Premier League on Friday. Kaoru Mitoma scored a remarkable header to give Brighton the lead in the first half, while Flynn Downes equalized an hour into the match. Shortly thereafter, Cameron Archer, a teammate, converted a cross from Southampton substitute Ryan Fraser. After a VAR review lasting over four minutes, it was determined that Archer was onside; however, Adam Armstrong was penalized for being offside, despite not touching the ball, on the grounds of interfering with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. “I find it difficult to accept,” stated Southampton manager Russell Martin during an interview with Sky Sports. “We were informed that it impacted Bart Verbruggen’s ability, and if Adam’s movement had indeed displaced Verbruggen, I could comprehend the decision, but he remained stationary. I fail to see how it influenced the goalkeeper. “In my view, this still constitutes human error. The mistake lies in the fact that it is not clear and obvious enough to warrant correction. The on-field decision should hold significance. I am quite frustrated.” As a result, Southampton, remaining at the bottom of the league, had to settle for their first point away from home.
