Textor anticipates a unique soccer victory as Botafogo competes against Atletico Mineiro in the Copa Libertadores final.
The Brazilian club Botafogo has the potential to deliver owner John Textor his most significant achievement in soccer to date if it secures victory against Atletico Mineiro in the Copa Libertadores final on Saturday.
The American entrepreneur, who also possesses several European soccer teams, has faced considerable backlash from fans due to financial challenges and unsatisfactory performance. He has encountered criticism in Brazil as well, particularly after making unsubstantiated claims regarding match-fixing when Botafogo relinquished a 13-point lead, ultimately failing to capture the league title last year.
Witnessing Botafogo claim its inaugural continental title would represent a notable success.
After being relegated from the Brazilian league in 2020, Botafogo has regained its stature, largely due to Textor’s financial backing. His involvement is part of a broader trend of foreign ownership in Brazilian soccer, which was facilitated by a legislative change in 2021 that encouraged private investments.
Textor’s Eagle Football also has ownership stakes in Crystal Palace in the Premier League, French club Lyon, and RWD Molenbeek in Belgium.
At Botafogo, he has made substantial investments in high-profile players, including Argentina midfielder Thiago Almada for $25 million and winger Luiz Henrique for $21 million. The team is on the cusp of winning the Brazilian league for the first time since 1995, having ascended to the top of the table following a 3-1 victory over Palmeiras on Tuesday. A win against Internacional next week could secure the domestic championship for the team based in Rio de Janeiro.
