Three former SA cricketers arrested for match-fixing
ICC has always been strict about match fixing. Even then, match fixing incidents have not stopped. Such incidents often happen in domestic and franchise leagues. This time, three South African cricketers have been arrested on such charges.
The allegations against the three cricketers are that they were involved in a match-fixing scandal in 2015. They did this in the T20 Ram Slam Challenge tournament. Although the two arrested, Lonwabo Totsbe and Thami Solekile, played international cricket for the Proteas, Ithi Mbalati does not have that experience.
South Africa's corruption agency, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), has arrested three cricketers for fixing after almost 8 years. Mbalati was arrested on November 18 and Solkile and Totsbe were arrested on November 28-29 respectively.
Earlier, the investigative agency DPCI released a shocking report on match-fixing in October 2016. The trio have been banned from cricket since they were named as accused. The case against Mbalati was adjourned on February 20, 2025, after he appeared in the Pretoria Special Commercial Crimes Court this year. On the other hand, Solkile and Totsbe faced five different sections under the 2004 Corruption Act. Today (Friday), November 29, a new hearing was held in the adjourned case against them.
The Cricket Board was investigating former South African cricketer Ghulam Bodi's involvement in match-fixing. The investigation revealed that he had incited Bodi to fix three matches of the Ram Slam tournament in collaboration with an Indian bookie. Bodi was later arrested in 2018 and was sentenced to five years in prison in October 2019 after being charged with eight corruption charges. In addition, two others were later arrested and given six years in prison.
