Australia concluded the fourth day with a remarkable performance, leaving India in a state of astonishment.
Australia is poised to present a formidable challenge to India in the fourth match of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, taking place in Melbourne. After amassing 474 runs in their first innings, Australia concluded the day's play with a score of 228 for 9 in their second innings. India, having scored 369 runs in their first innings, has set a target of 333 runs, which may increase further on the fifth day.
Following Nitish Kumar Reddy's resilient innings of 114 runs on the fourth day, the seasoned Jasprit Bumrah revitalized the team's prospects in the second innings by dismissing six batters for 91 runs, claiming four wickets in the process. This achievement allowed Bumrah to reach the significant milestone of 200 Test wickets for India. Nevertheless, Marnus Labuschagne, in partnership with Pat Cummins, managed to stabilize the Australian innings.
After Labuschagne departed for 70 runs and Cummins for 41 runs, it appeared that Australia might struggle to surpass the 300-run mark. However, the duo of Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland thwarted that expectation, adding 55 runs for the last wicket. Lyon remains unbeaten on 41 runs, while Boland is not out on 10 runs. Both players will resume batting on the fifth day.
Australia will begin the fifth day at 228 runs for 9 wickets, aiming to extend their total to 350. Among the Indian bowlers, Bumrah has taken 4 wickets, while Mohammed Siraj has claimed 3 wickets.
Earlier on the fourth day, India batted for the last wicket, adding 11 runs to finish at 369 runs. The standout performance came from Tarun Reddy, who scored 114 runs, while Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed a solid 82 runs.
