India suffered a defeat in the Boxing Day Test by a margin of 184 runs, having lost 7 wickets during the final session of play.

India commenced the Melbourne Test following a draw at the Gabba. Contrary to expectations of securing a victory in the Melbourne Boxing Day Test, India was unable to achieve even a simple draw this time. Despite not claiming any wickets in the first session, India suffered the loss of 7 wickets in the final session.

Ultimately, Rohit Sharma's team lost the match by 184 runs, placing them at a disadvantage of 1-2 in the five-match series. This defeat also significantly diminished their aspirations for the World Test Championship final.

Australia established a target of 340 runs for India to win the Melbourne Test, with one day remaining. However, the Indian batting lineup failed to perform effectively on the fifth day.

The Indian team had hoped that, even if victory was unattainable, they could at least secure a draw. Unfortunately, this hope was dashed as the situation drastically changed within a single session. At the beginning of the third session, India had 7 wickets in hand, yet they were all out during that session.

Starting with 2 wickets for 33 runs, India collapsed to a total of just 155 runs. Only two players managed to score in double figures: Yashasvi Jaiswal with 84 runs and Rishabh Pant with 30 runs, while the rest of the team failed to contribute significantly.

In the earlier stages of the match, Australia batted first, amassing 474 runs. India responded with 369 runs, and Australia then scored 234 runs in their second innings, setting India the target of 340 runs.

Pat Cummins was awarded the Man of the Match title for his impressive performance, taking 3 wickets in each innings for 49 and 41 runs, respectively.
