Sri Lanka's dramatic defeat to New Zealand

Sri Lanka lost the first match of the three-match T20 series to New Zealand by 8 runs due to an incredible batting collapse. The team, which was on the verge of victory, suddenly lost its rhythm and crashed out of the match.

Chasing a target of 173, Sri Lanka seemed to be on course for an easy victory. At the end of 13 overs, the team's score was 120 for no wickets. But in the 14th over, Jacob Duffy's excellent pace bowling turned the tide of the match. In this over, Kusal Mendis (46 off 36 balls), Kusal Perera and Kamindu Mendis (both out for zero) were dismissed for three wickets in the space of four balls. This suddenly led to a collapse in the Sri Lankan innings.

However, opener Pathum Nishanka tried to keep the team in the fight. He was a symbol of confidence by playing an innings of 90 runs off 60 balls. His innings had 7 fours and 3 sixes, which was his career best. But Nishanka's efforts ultimately failed due to the failure of the rest of the team's batters. Sri Lanka were reduced to 172 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. No other batsman could reach double figures. New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy was the man of the match with 3 for 21. Matt Henry and Zachary Foakes took two wickets each.

Earlier, New Zealand were in trouble at the beginning after losing the toss and choosing to bat at Mount Maunganui. They lost five wickets for 65 runs in 10 overs. However, the aggressive batting of Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell turned their innings around. They added 105 runs for the sixth wicket.

Mitchell scored 62 runs off 42 balls, which included 4 fours and 2 sixes. On the other hand, Bracewell scored 59 runs off just 33 balls, which included 4 fours and 4 sixes in his innings. Both were out in the last over. Riding on their excellent batting, New Zealand posted a challenging score of 172 for 8.

Binura Fernando, Mahish Thikshana and Wanindu Hasaranga took two wickets each for Sri Lanka. Mathisha Pathirana took one wicket.

With this win, New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the series. Sri Lanka will go into the field with the aim of turning the tables in the second match.
