Celtic midfielder Arne Engels was struck in the face by a coin thrown from the stands during the latter stages of a 3-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox on Thursday. Engels collapsed to the ground after being hit near his left eye while preparing to take a corner kick. He received medical attention and resumed play shortly thereafter. Due to a ticketing dispute concerning allocations for away supporters, there were no Celtic fans present at the stadium. Celtic defender Alistair Johnston remarked, “We’re just fortunate that it didn’t strike him directly in the eye.” Despite their victory over their archrival, Rangers remain 11 points behind league leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the 21-year-old Engels, who represents Belgium internationally, sustained no injuries.

“It’s certainly not ideal for the sport, but yes, he’s fine,” Rodgers stated.

Rangers released a statement denouncing the incident “in the strongest possible terms” and indicated their intention to cooperate with Police Scotland in the ongoing investigation.
