Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana may be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury.
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana may face the possibility of missing the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury.
The 24-year-old French player, who has been sidelined for the entire 2023-24 season following ACL surgery, last appeared on the field on December 1, when he was substituted during the 3-0 victory against Aston Villa.
Blues manager Enzo Maresca stated on Friday that Fofana's injury is more severe than initially anticipated, indicating that the center back will be unavailable for an extended period. Currently, there are no immediate plans for surgical intervention.
“He could be out for the season,” Maresca remarked. “We cannot determine with certainty if it will be for the entire season, but regrettably, he may miss a significant portion of it.”
Fofana became one of the most costly defenders in football history when he transferred to Chelsea from Leicester in the summer of 2022 for a fee of £75 million ($93 million).
“Certainly, Wes represents a significant loss for us,” Maresca added.
