Gautam Gambhir shares his perspective on the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the context of the India versus Australia series.
India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has conveyed his belief in the capabilities of veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, asserting that both still possess the drive to succeed in Test cricket. Gambhir's remarks followed India's disappointing 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which culminated in Australia's commanding 6-wicket victory in the final Test. This outcome not only secured the BGT for Australia after a decade but also eliminated India from contention for the World Test Championship final.
Gautam Gambhir on the prospects of Rohit and Kohli
Despite their recent challenges, Gambhir underscored that both Rohit and Kohli are resolute athletes who will make future decisions with the team's welfare as a priority. “They are resilient individuals with a strong desire to succeed; they will determine what is best for Indian cricket,” Gambhir remarked during the post-match press conference. Rohit Sharma, having faced an extended period of underperformance, opted to rest during the final Test, while Kohli encountered difficulties, being dismissed in the slips on eight occasions throughout the series. Nevertheless, Gambhir commended Rohit's sense of responsibility and leadership, emphasizing the necessity of fairness within the team: “To maintain harmony in the dressing room, I must be honest and equitable to all.”
The head coach also highlighted the need for players to demonstrate their commitment to red-ball cricket, suggesting that those aspiring to remain in the Indian Test squad should exhibit their dedication in domestic competitions, particularly the Ranji Trophy. This assertion appeared to address senior players who have frequently chosen to forgo participation in this esteemed domestic tournament, a trend that has raised concerns regarding their commitment to Test cricket.
