Hideki Matsuyama of Japan established a new 54-hole tournament record at the PGA Tour season opener in Hawaii, known as The Sentry. The overnight leader recorded a score of 62, bringing his total to 27 under par, yet he maintains only a one-shot lead as Collin Morikawa also finished with a 62.Both competitors fell just short of matching the course record on a day characterized by minimal wind, creating ideal conditions for low scoring.Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, achieved an impressive 11 birdies, marking the highest number he has recorded in a single round on the PGA Tour.At 32 years of age, he had the opportunity to equal the course record with a lengthy eagle attempt on the 18th hole but ultimately required two putts to secure his final birdie of the day.Morikawa, a fellow major champion, initially took the lead on the front nine, securing three birdies and an eagle within the first five holes. However, his lead was short-lived, as Matsuyama, who has only dropped one shot throughout the first three rounds, caught up on the subsequent hole."Collin played well, and I just kind of followed him, so it was a good day," Matsuyama remarked. "It was a lot of fun, but I would prefer if he took it easy on Sunday."Morikawa, the 2020 US PGA and 2021 Open champion, is confident in his ability to surpass his competitor. "I'm going to give it my all tomorrow because my goal is to win," stated the American. "When you're playing at that level, people often refer to being in the zone, but it really comes down to focusing on each shot."Belgium's Thomas Detry trails by four strokes at 22 under after a round of 64, which is one better than South Korea's Sungjae Im, who also recorded a 62. England's Harry Hall
