Polish ski jumper Stekala publicly identifies as gay.
Polish ski jumper Andrzej Stekala has bravely revealed his sexual orientation, sharing a heartfelt message in which he expressed his grief over the loss of his partner, who died in November.
At 29 years of age, Stekala began his World Cup career in 2015. He was a member of the Polish team that secured bronze medals at the Ski Flying World Championships in 2020 and the FIS World Championships in 2021.
In a poignant post on social media late Wednesday, he stated, "For years, I lived in the shadow of fear, concealing my true self, worried that my identity could lead to my downfall. I want you to truly know me. I’m gay." He mentioned that the passing of his long-term partner in November has deeply affected him and contributed to his decision to come out publicly.
"I no longer wish to conceal my identity. I am who I am – a man who has loved and continues to love. I believe he would want me to live authentically," Stekala added.
Currently, he is not participating in the ongoing Four Hills Tournament. The number of Polish athletes who have come out as gay remains limited, largely due to entrenched conservative values and the significant influence of the Catholic Church.\
