Bangladesh eliminates Pakistan, India, and New Zealand in the semifinals.
Bangladesh were eliminated from the tournament after losing to New Zealand by five wickets in their second match in the group stage of the Champions Trophy. At the same time, the slim chances of hosts Pakistan in the tournament were also ended through this. India and New Zealand have secured semi-final tickets from Group A by winning two consecutive matches.
Chasing a target of 237 runs set by Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh shook New Zealand from the beginning. The first over of the innings bowled by Taskin Ahmed was a wicket maiden. Taskin crushed the stumps of Kiwi Will Young (0) with five consecutive dots on the last ball of the over.
Then, experienced batsman Kane Williamson was caught behind the wicket (5) by Nahid Rana. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra tried to pull New Zealand, who were in danger after losing two wickets for 15 runs, to pull them up. They overcame the initial shock with a third partnership of 57 runs. The pair was broken when Conway made 30 runs off the bowling of Mustafizur Rahman.
However, despite losing his partner, Rabindra remained steadfast at the crease. The batsman reached his personal fifty in 50 balls. He put on a big partnership of 129 runs with wicketkeeper Tom Latham for the fourth wicket. In the meantime, Rabindra scored his fourth century of his ODI career in 95 balls. He scored 112 runs with 12 fours and 1 six before being caught by replacement fielder Emon off Rishad Hossain.
Latham was not far behind either. He scored 55 runs before being run out by Mahmudullah's direct throw.
The match slipped out of Bangladesh's hands in both the Conway-Rabindra partnership for the third wicket and the Rabindra-Latham partnership for the fourth wicket. However, to be honest, Bangladesh's own batting innings took control of the match.
If you win, you will survive, if you lose, you will be eliminated. In such a balanced match, the Bangladesh batsmen disappointed. Especially Mushfiqur, Mahmudullah, Miraj, and Hridoy could not take responsibility at all. Standing in the ruins, Bangladesh reached 236 for 9 with captain Shanto's fifty and Zaker-Rishadh's two innings at the end.
Shanto, who started the innings in the absence of Soumya, scored the team's highest 77 runs. However, due to the failure of Mushfiqur-Mahmudullah in the middle order, Bangladesh was in danger of crossing 200 at one stage. In the end, Zaker Ali's 45 runs and Rishad's 26 runs in two fighting innings, Bangladesh got a decent score. Spinner Michael Bracewell took the highest 4 wickets for the Kiwis.
However, with a capital of 236 runs, Shanto-Miraj could not even put up a proper fight.
