Former cricketers criticize Babar for Pakistan's loss
Pakistan lost to New Zealand by 60 runs in the opening match of the Champions Trophy. The blame for the failure lies with Pakistani batsman Babar Azam. Former cricketers believe that his slow innings prevented the team from moving forward on the path to victory.
Chasing a target of 321 runs to win, Babar played an innings of 64 runs off 90 balls, with a strike rate of just 71.11. Pakistan needed to score 6.42 runs per over to win, but Babar played 52 dots off 90 balls, which went as 57.77% balls.
Legendary Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram said in a post-match analysis on YouTube channel Sports Central, "I told Babar before the match not to think about the run rate, to take his time and let the batting revolve around him. But I think he took it a little too seriously! But I didn't ask him to play so many dots."
Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took a dig at Babar's batting on social media X, writing, 'Babar's journey to fifty with Salman Ali Agar's batting is like the best depiction of the tortoise and the hare story.'
After losing 3 wickets for 69 runs on the day, Babar put on a 58-run partnership with vice-captain Salman Agar off 59 balls. However, the difference was clear - Salman scored 42 runs off 28 balls, while Babar only made 16 off 31 balls.
According to another former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif, Babar's batting is completely incompatible with modern cricket. He wrote on X, 'Babar is still playing 80s ODI cricket. He has hit only two boundaries against irregular spinners, and has scored few runs in the middle overs. This batting is of no use in modern cricket.'
This defeat has made Pakistan's path to the Champions Trophy semi-finals even more difficult. It goes without saying that the discussion about Babar's form and batting style will only increase.
