Galatasaray has alleged that Jose Mourinho made racist remarks following a match in the Turkish league.
Galatasaray intends to initiate legal action against Jose Mourinho and submit complaints to the governing bodies of soccer after alleging that the Fenerbahce coach made racist remarks following a Turkish league match.
The league leaders released a statement following the 0-0 draw with Fenerbahce on Monday, announcing their decision to take action against Mourinho, the 62-year-old Portuguese coach who transitioned to Turkey from Roma last year after managing several prominent clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan.
Earlier in the season, Mourinho faced a fine and suspension due to his outburst against local match officials and the league. His remarks concerning Turkish referees and the Galatasaray bench after the recent match between the top two teams in the league drew additional criticism.
In their statement, Galatasaray asserted that Mourinho had “consistently made derogatory remarks aimed at the Turkish populace.” They further declared, “Today, his rhetoric has intensified. We hereby formally announce our intention to pursue criminal proceedings regarding the racist comments made by Jose Mourinho and will consequently file official complaints with UEFA and FIFA.”
In his post-match comments, Mourinho expressed support for the decision to appoint a foreign referee for the match and commended Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic for his “excellent performance.”
Mourinho mentioned that he approached the referee to express his gratitude after the game. However, when he encountered the fourth official, a Turkish referee, he remarked, “If you are the referee ... it would be a disaster.”
When questioned about an early challenge in the match, he stated that a Turkish referee would have issued a yellow card “after the significant dive and their bench reacting like monkeys.”
In November, the outspoken Mourinho received a one-match ban and a fine following his criticism of Turkish soccer, where he claimed he was battling “the system” and implied that officials were biased against his team.
He is currently preparing Fenerbahce for a Europa League round-of-16 matchup against Rangers next month.
