Pakistan prays for Bangladesh's victory
The whole of Pakistan is praying for Bangladesh's victory against New Zealand. The reason for this is clear. India's semi-final is almost certain after winning two consecutive matches in the ongoing Champions Trophy. New Zealand, Pakistan and Bangladesh are in the fight to reach the semi-finals from Group 'A'.
New Zealand is in a good position among these three teams. They started their mission by defeating the hosts and current champions of this edition of the Champions Trophy, Pakistan, in the opening match of the tournament. Bangladesh is on the back foot after losing their first match against India. Pakistan is in a worse situation. They are in danger of being eliminated from the tournament after losing their first two matches against New Zealand and India.
Bangladesh and New Zealand face off in Rawalpindi, Pakistan today. If New Zealand wins this match, the semi-finals will be confirmed. However, if Bangladesh can defeat New Zealand, the game will be tight.
Then Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand will have equal points in two matches. In that case, all three teams will have to look forward to the last match of the group.
In the last two matches of Group 'A', New Zealand will play against India and Pakistan's opponent will be Bangladesh. The fate of the semi-finals will depend on the results of those two matches. If New Zealand loses to India and Pakistan beats Bangladesh by a big margin, Pakistan will be India's partner in the semi-finals.
And if New Zealand loses to India and Bangladesh wins against Pakistan, then Bangladesh will reach the semi-finals. And if New Zealand beats India and Bangladesh loses to Pakistan, New Zealand will reach the semi-finals.
There will be a calculation beyond this. If both New Zealand and Bangladesh win their matches, then both teams will have 4 points. In that case, the fate of the semi-finals will be decided by the net run rate. However, these complex calculations will be needed only if Bangladesh wins against New Zealand today.
