Referee punished for asking for Messi's autograph after match
The referee has sparked controversy by asking for Lionel Messi's autograph after the match. He has also brought danger to himself. This incident is not in line with the code of conduct of a referee! The referee has apologized after realizing his mistake. However, he could not avoid punishment.
Referee Marco Antonio Ortiz Nava has been punished for breaching discipline for asking for Messi's autograph after the CONCACAF Champions Cup match. However, CONCACAF has not disclosed what kind of punishment he has been given.
Inter Miami and Sporting Kansas City faced each other in the CONCACAF Champions Cup match on Thursday (February 20) morning Bangladesh time. In the match held in severe cold, Messi's great goal gave Miami the victory.
After the final whistle, the referee walked towards Messi and was seen asking for something. At that time, it was spread that Messi asked for the Argentine magician's jersey. However, it was later confirmed that the referee asked for an autograph.
While there is a humanitarian reason behind this, there is no room for compromise when it comes to professionalism. A CONCACAF spokesperson told ESPN in a statement.
“CONCACAF is aware of the incident between referee Marco Antonio Ortiz Nava and Lionel Messi at the end of last night’s Champions League match between Sporting Kansas City and Inter Miami. After investigating, CONCACAF has determined that the referee requested an autograph for a family member with special needs.”
“The referee’s behavior is inconsistent with the confederation’s code of conduct for match officials and the procedures in place for such requests. The referee has acknowledged his mistake, apologized for the incident, and accepted the sanction imposed by CONCACAF.”
Sporting Kansas City said in a statement that they have reported the incident to Major League Soccer and Inter Miami.
The first leg of the opening round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup was already in the news due to inclement weather. The match was postponed for 24 hours after heavy snowfall and more snow was forecast. The next day, the temperature at the start of the match was still five degrees, which felt like minus five degrees. By the middle of the match, the temperature had dropped to three degrees, which felt like minus eight degrees.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said after the match that it was almost impossible to play a match in such inhuman conditions.
