Security risks at Champions Trophy, says PCB

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is taking the security cordon breaching incident in the Bangladesh-New Zealand match very seriously. A spectator entered the playing field during the ICC Champions Trophy match in Rawalpindi on Monday (February 25).

Incidents of overzealous fans entering the field are common in cricket and other sporting events. For example, in November 2023, during the final match of the ICC World Cup held in Ahmedabad, India, a pro-Palestinian protester broke through the security cordon and hugged Indian batsman Virat Kohli, causing a temporary disruption to the game.

During the match in Rawalpindi, a spectator entered the field and tried to hug New Zealand cricketer Rachin Rabindra. He was carrying a picture of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Hafiz Saad Hussain Rizvi.

In a statement after the incident, the PCB said, “The PCB is taking the incident of security breach at the ground yesterday (Monday) very seriously. Ensuring the safety of players and officials is our top priority.”

The PCB also said that it has been in contact with local security agencies and they are committed to increasing security personnel and strengthening access control systems around each venue.

The statement added, “The person who breached the security fence and entered the ground has been arrested and sent to court. At the same time, he has been permanently banned from all cricket grounds in Pakistan.”

The PCB also said that it is working with security agencies and venue authorities to prevent such incidents in the future and has taken a plan to review and strengthen security protocols.
