South Africa commenced their Champions Trophy campaign with a win against Afghanistan.
mmmAfghanistan faced the daunting task of achieving a record run total to secure victory. In pursuit of 316 runs, the match proved challenging for Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan. The Afghan team commenced their Champions Trophy campaign with a significant defeat against South Africa, losing by 107 runs.
The margin of defeat could have been more substantial had it not been for Rahmat Shah, who displayed remarkable resilience. Battling under difficult circumstances in Karachi, he fought valiantly until the conclusion of the match. Had he received more support from his teammates, he might have reached the milestone of his sixth career century.
Rahmat contributed an impressive 90 runs after an initial dismissal for just four. Before being the last player out, he struck 9 fours and 1 six. Throughout his innings, he witnessed his teammates come and go, as six other Afghan batsmen managed to reach double figures, yet none surpassed the 20-run mark. Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan were the next highest scorers, each contributing 18 runs.
From the outset, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi relentlessly targeted the Afghan batsmen. Lungi claimed two wickets, including that of Rahmatullah Gurbaz (10), while Rabada dismantled the Afghan batting lineup, taking three wickets before the team total reached 89 runs, with five batsmen already dismissed. Others later joined in the celebrations for Rabada's achievements.
In addition to Lungi, Wian Mulder also secured two wickets, while Marco Jansen and Keshab Maharaj each took one. Ultimately, Afghanistan was bowled out for 208 runs in 43.3 overs.
Earlier, Ryan Rickelton's maiden century propelled South Africa to a formidable total of 315 runs. Temba Bavuma (58), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (52*) each contributed fifties. Rickelton was awarded the man of the match for his 103 runs and two catches.
