Philippine wild card Eala stuns Swiatek to reach Miami semis
Philippine wild card Alexandra Eala achieved the most significant victory of her burgeoning career by defeating Polish world number two Iga Swiatek with a remarkable score of 6-2, 7-5 on Wednesday, propelling her into the semi-finals of the Miami Open. The 19-year-old, known for her powerful shots, displayed remarkable composure against one of her role models, taking control of the match by breaking Swiatek's serve early and maintaining her advantage throughout. "I am at a loss for words; I am just in disbelief right now and feeling euphoric," Eala expressed during her on-court interview. "This moment will always hold a special place in my heart."
Swiatek, who faced the match under heightened security following a verbal incident with a spectator over the weekend, struggled to hold her serve in the first set, while Eala played with confidence, delivering winners from various positions on the court. The five-time Grand Slam champion committed an astonishing 19 unforced errors in the opening set and sought guidance from her coach before briefly stepping off the court. In the second set, Eala overcame a 4-2 deficit and maintained her composure as Swiatek attempted to serve for the set at 5-4, ultimately sealing the match with her eighth break.
This victory over Swiatek marked Eala's third elimination of a Grand Slam champion in the women's draw, following her earlier triumphs against Australian Open winner Madison Keys and 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Eala's next challenge will be against the winner of the day's other quarter-final match between American fourth seed Jessica Pegula and Britain's 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu.
On the men's side, Serbian fourth seed Novak Djokovic, aiming for a record seventh Miami title, will conclude the evening session against American 24th seed Sebastian Korda for a place in the semi-finals. Additionally, Bulgarian 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov is set to compete against Argentine Francisco Cerundolo in another quarter-final, while German top seed Alexander Zverev will face Frenchman Arthur Fils in a last-16 match that was postponed due to rain on Tuesday.
