Captain Shanto Responds to Performance Criticism Amid Salary Hike

Despite a notable increase in salaries, match fees, and overall facilities for the Bangladesh national cricket team, their performance on the field continues to fall short—prompting tough questions at the post-match press conference following their defeat in the Sylhet Test on Wednesday.

The Tigers recently suffered a 3-wicket loss at home against Zimbabwe, a team considered relatively weaker. Bangladesh were bowled out for 191 and 255 in their two innings, resulting in a series defeat that has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike.

In the aftermath of the loss, a journalist questioned the disparity between the enhanced financial benefits and the team’s lackluster performance. Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto responded with a counter-question:
“It seems you are not happy with the salary increase…” he remarked, challenging the tone of the query.

Shanto acknowledged the raise in compensation, saying:
“I think the match fees have increased after a long time, and that’s certainly praiseworthy. But the main focus should be on playing responsible, quality cricket. Since we are representing the country, we must take responsibility for our performances.”

He added that while players are working hard, “there’s still a significant gap in execution on the field. We have to discuss together how to improve and prepare accordingly. Those with specific roles need to be accountable.”

As per the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s recent decision, match fees now stand at 8 lakh taka for a Test match, 4 lakh for ODIs, and 2.5 lakh for T20Is—up from 6 lakh, 3 lakh, and 2 lakh respectively. Additionally, contracted players’ monthly salaries have also been increased:

  • A+ category: 10 lakh taka (e.g., Taskin Ahmed)

  • A, B, C, and D categories: 8 lakh, 6 lakh, 4 lakh, and 2 lakh taka respectively.

Alongside financial incentives, several ancillary facilities have been upgraded for the players. However, the enhanced support system has not yet translated into improved performances—leaving both fans and the team searching for answers as they move forward in the season.
