Pakistan appoints new coach

In December last year, former Australian star Jason Gillespie stepped down as the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team. Then the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed former Pakistani star pacer Aqib Javed as the interim head coach.

This time, the PCB appointed former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson as the coach of Babar Azam-Mohammad Rizwan. Hesson is the coach of Islamabad United in the current season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

A few days ago, the PCB issued a recruitment notice for a new coach. Interested candidates are required to have a Level Three coaching certificate and 10 years of coaching experience at the domestic or international level.

Hesson has a long experience as a coach. He took over the responsibility of the New Zealand team coach in July 2012 and resigned in June 2018. Earlier, he also served as the coach of the Argentina cricket team in 2003. After taking over the responsibility of the Kenya cricket team coach in 2011, he resigned due to 'security reasons'.

Hesson, 50, was also the cricket director of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. Hesson took over as the head coach of Islamabad United in November 2023. Under him, Islamabad won their third PSL title last season. That was his debut season in the PSL.

Former star spinner Saqlain Mushtaq was in the running to become Pakistan's coach. The Express Tribune says that the PCB has finalized Hesson as the coach.
