5 champion clubs, unique Chelsea, 9 clubs in Europe - something English football has never seen before

Two English clubs, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, finished the season in style on the European stage. Chelsea won the title by beating Real Betis 4-1 in the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday night. And a week ago, Tottenham won the Europa League final.

Chelsea raised themselves to new heights by winning the Conference League. The London club now has its name in each of Europe's five major trophies. Before winning the Conference League, Chelsea had won the Champions League twice (2011-12 and 2020-21), the Europa League twice (2012-13 and 2018-19), the UEFA Super Cup twice (1998 and 2021) and the Cup Winners' Cup twice (1970-71 and 1997-98). Now, Chelsea is the first and only club to have won each of Europe's five major trophies. On the other hand, this year's Europa League is Tottenham's first major title since 2008. It is not uncommon for two English clubs to win European trophies in one season. Two years ago, Manchester City and West Ham became European champions, and in 2019, Liverpool and Chelsea achieved the same feat. However, this is the first time that five different English clubs have won a major title in one season. Before Chelsea's Conference League and Tottenham's Europa League victory, this season Liverpool (Premier League), Crystal Palace (FA Cup) and Newcastle United (League Cup) won.

English clubs march in Europe
Tottenham has entered the Champions League as Europa League winners. Chelsea has also made it to Europe's best competition by finishing fourth in the league. In the Champions League, they are joined by Premier League winners Liverpool, runners-up Arsenal, third-placed Manchester City and fifth-placed Newcastle United. Aston Villa failed to qualify for the Champions League after losing to Manchester United on the final day. However, they have qualified for the Europa League in sixth place, where they will be joined by FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.

Nottingham Forest have returned to Europe in seventh place. Nottingham, who have been to Europe for the first time since the 1995-96 season, will play in the Conference League.
