Australian Open lands major win as McIlroy commits for two years.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy has signed on to play the next two editions of the Australian Open, delivering a major coup for one of golf’s oldest tournaments. The Northern Irishman, fresh off completing the career Grand Slam at Augusta last month, will compete at Royal Melbourne in December 2025 and at Kingston Heath in 2026.
"I'm proud to be committing to the Australian Open for the next two years, especially with it being played on the world-class Melbourne Sandbelt, somewhere I've always wanted to play professionally," McIlroy said in a statement. "The success of the Australian Open is important for the global game, and I'm incredibly confident it will thrive again this year."
First held in 1904, the Australian Open boasts a storied history, with legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player among past champions. McIlroy previously won the title in 2013, defeating Adam Scott in a dramatic finish at Royal Sydney.
Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland welcomed McIlroy’s commitment, calling it a "mouth-watering proposition" for fans and a significant step in boosting the tournament’s global standing. The announcement comes after the tournament scrapped its mixed-gender format earlier this year following player concerns, marking a return to a more traditional setup.
