Boca Juniors edged past Lanús on penalties to secure a spot in the Apertura quarter-finals, despite unrest among the fans.
Boca Juniors edged past Lanús with a 4–2 victory in a penalty shootout on Saturday to secure their place in the Argentine Apertura quarter-finals, following a goalless draw at La Bombonera marred by fan unrest.
Goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín was the hero of the night, producing a string of vital saves throughout the match and denying Alexis Canelo’s opening penalty in the shootout. After Lanús winger Dylan Aquino fired over the bar, Boca calmly converted their first three spot-kicks. Substitute Milton Giménez sealed the win with the decisive penalty.
Despite the progression, the atmosphere at La Bombonera was tense, with fans voicing their frustration over the team’s recent performances, directing chants at players and club management alike.
“We definitely need to improve,” said interim coach Mariano Herrón, who took over from Fernando Gago last month. “We achieved what we wanted, which was to advance, but we understand the fans’ anger.”
The match itself lacked quality, with neither side generating clear-cut chances. Lanús came closest in the first half through Ramiro Carrera, but Marchesín made a crucial save. He continued his standout display in the second half, denying Marcelino Moreno and preserving the deadlock.
Lanús captain Carlos Izquierdoz saw the crowd’s discontent as validation. “We attacked, we were well positioned, and the fact their fans started to jeer means we were doing things right,” he told ESPN.
Boca will next face either Independiente or Independiente Rivadavia in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere in Saturday’s Round of 16 action, San Lorenzo edged Tigre 2–1 in dramatic fashion, Rosario Central beat Estudiantes 2–0 at home, and Platense pulled off a late upset with a 1–0 win at Racing Club. Title contenders River Plate host Barracas Central on Monday.
