Matthew Ford's record-breaking fifty with 8 sixes

Matthew Ford's record-breaking fifty with 8 sixes

Although he is primarily a bowler, Matthew Ford wreaked havoc with the bat. This young West Indies player created history in the second ODI against Ireland in Dublin. He scored a fifty off just 16 balls. In this, Ford shared the record of South African legend AB de Villiers. De Villiers had scored a fifty off 16 balls against the West Indies in Johannesburg in 2015. This time, the 23-year-old Ford has written his name in that record.

Towards the end of the team's innings, Ford came out to bat at number eight. Then he rained sixes all over the field. He scored a devastating innings of 58 runs off just 19 balls with 8 sixes and 2 fours, a strike rate of 305.26!

All 56 of Ford's runs came from boundaries. That is, 96.55 percent of the runs in the innings came from hitting boundaries. This is a new record in the history of ODIs in terms of runs scored from boundaries in an innings of fifty. The previous highest was Andre Fletcher's 96.15 percent (all 50 runs in 52 overs against Bangladesh in 2009 came from boundaries).

Ford also achieved the feat of hitting 8 sixes in ODIs by batting lower down. There is no record of so many sixes while batting at eight or below. The previous highest was 7 sixes by Abdul Razzaq (2003) and Tanvir Afzal (2015).

KC Carty, who came in at number three, played another brilliant innings in the West Indies innings. He scored 102 runs off 109 balls. The team's total stood at 352 runs for 8 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.
