On Saturday morning, Indian cricket was rocked by the news that Virat Kohli has officially informed the BCCI of his decision to step away from Test cricket, marking the end of a monumental chapter in the sport. The announcement, made via his Instagram page, left fans across the country stunned and emotional.

"As I step away from this format, it's not easy — but it feels right," Kohli wrote. "I've given it everything I had, and it's given me back so much more than I could've hoped for. I'm walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way."

Kohli's departure has already sparked concern among former cricketers, with ex-India coach Lalchand Rajput urging him to reconsider and participate in the upcoming high-stakes Test series against England. Rajput emphasized that Kohli’s presence is vital, saying the national team can’t afford to lose such experience, particularly with Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin having already retired.

With only Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah emerging as guaranteed selections in an increasingly inexperienced squad, Kohli’s absence could significantly impact India’s performance in the series—which also marks the start of a new ICC World Test Championship cycle. His exit, analysts warn, may hand a psychological edge to England as they prepare for the crucial tour.
