Shanto reveals reason for leaving T20 captaincy
Several reasons came to the fore. Nazmul Hossain Shanto did not say anything directly. The BCB also did not say anything about his resignation from the T20 captaincy. Finally, Shanto himself made the revelation. The Tigers' Test captain said that he made this decision to focus on batting.
Shanto stepped down from the Twenty20 format last December. In this format, Bangladesh's burden fell on Liton Das. He wanted to step down from the captaincy in the other two formats as well. But the BCB wants Shanto to at least continue to lead in the Tests. The Tigers' batter has also accepted the matter.
Today, with the full series against Sri Lanka ahead, Shanto revealed the reason for stepping down from the T20 captaincy, 'There was a reason behind stepping down from the T20 captaincy that I had informed the Cricket Board myself. I do not want to captain anymore, in this format. I wanted to give some time to my own batting. Because we are playing so many Tests, ODIs, T20s.’
The team was doing relatively well under Shantar. But there was criticism about his batting performance. The Tiger captain was in a circle of failure, especially in short-format cricket. Shantar took a difficult decision because of his improvement in batting.
The Tigers’ Test captain said, ‘It was a little difficult to work on my batting. So for that reason, I requested the board not to stay in T20s. To focus more on batting, so that I can contribute more... to the team in batting. I think I can contribute better in that area if the opportunity comes in the future.’
Faced with criticism, Shantar said during the South Africa series last October that he did not want to captain in any format anymore. But the BCB did not want to let him go. Now Shantar will take charge of Tests.
