Cherki showcases Haaland's celebrations following a spectacular goal in Manchester City's victory in the English League Cup.
Rayan Cherki emulated teammate Erling Haaland’s goal celebrations after executing a stunning shot into the top corner during Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Brentford in the English League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The French playmaker showcased some robotic dance moves and subsequently sat down in a cross-legged yoga position after giving a significantly altered City team a lead in the 32nd minute.
With his impressive tricks, skills, and remarkable technique, Cherki is quickly becoming a fan favorite in his inaugural season in Manchester following his transfer from Lyon. In a recent match against Sunderland, he delivered a ‘rabona’ cross that was converted by Phil Foden, prompting City manager Pep Guardiola to encourage Cherki to adopt a more straightforward style of play akin to that of Lionel Messi.
The goal scored against Brentford was one that Messi would have admired. After gathering a headed clearance at the edge of the penalty area, Cherki outsmarted an opponent by shifting the ball to his right foot before unleashing a shot into the top corner. Savinho contributed a second goal for City in the 67th minute, with a shot that was significantly deflected, looping over Brentford goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson.
Haaland was listed as a substitute for the match, did not enter the field, and was observed shaking hands with Cherki when the midfielder was substituted in the second half.
City progressed to the semifinals of the League Cup for the first time since 2021, the year it secured the title for the fourth consecutive season and the eighth time overall.
Their opponent in the semifinals will be the defending champion Newcastle, which netted a stoppage-time goal to defeat Fulham 2-1 on Tuesday.
Chelsea is set to face either Arsenal or Crystal Palace in the other semifinal matchup.
Le's late winner
Miley scored a header from a corner in the second minute of added time for Newcastle, just as the match appeared to be heading towards a penalty shootout.
Yoane Wissa, who has recently returned from a long-term injury, gave Newcastle the lead in the 10th minute with his first goal since transferring from Brentford during the summer. Saša Lukić equalized for Fulham in the 16th minute.
Newcastle is already facing defensive challenges due to injuries — Miley, a midfielder, was forced to play as an emergency right back against Fulham — and they lost full back Tino Livramento to a knee injury midway through the second half.
“It doesn’t look good,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. “The fact he came off is a worrying sign and we’re so stretched in that area.”
