Mbappé makes a scoring comeback following his injury as Madrid triumphs over Alaves, providing a boost for Alonso.
Kylian Mbappé made a successful return from injury on Sunday, scoring and helping Real Madrid secure a 2-1 victory against Alaves in the Spanish league, thereby alleviating some of the pressure on coach Xabi Alonso.
Rodrygo also found the net as Madrid closed the gap to four points behind league leaders Barcelona, who triumphed over Osasuna 2-0 on Saturday.
Having won only two of their last eight matches across all competitions, Madrid was coming off a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League, which had led to discontent among fans at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
“We are united in this, and we continue to fight through both good and challenging times,” Alonso stated. “The team performed admirably today. We started strong and secured the three points. It is essential to remain united, as it is the only way to maintain strength and improve consistently.”
Mbappé, who was sidelined during Madrid’s match against City on Wednesday due to a minor injury, netted his 26th goal of the season across all competitions for Madrid after a skillful run down the left flank, evading a defender before striking into the top corner from just inside the area in the 24th minute.
Alaves equalized with a goal from Carlos Vicente during a breakaway in the 68th minute, but Rodrygo restored the visitors' lead with a close-range finish following a run and assist from Vinícius Júnior.
This marked Rodrygo’s second goal of the season, having previously scored against City to break a nine-month scoring drought with the club.
Vinícius Júnior embraced Alonso after the goal, demonstrating a rare public display of support from the Brazilian towards the former Madrid player. This gesture followed media reports suggesting that the coach had lost the confidence of the locker room.
Alaves, remaining in 12th place, had recently secured a victory against Sociedad.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois achieved his 200th win in 310 appearances for Madrid since joining in 2018. Defender Antonio Rüdiger marked his 100th Spanish league match with the club.
Due to injuries to regular starters, Alonso fielded 19-year-old Víctor Valdepeñas from Madrid’s “B” team in the left-back position.
