Morocco and South Africa, as hosts, advance to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup, while Salah takes a break.
The host nation, Morocco, along with South Africa, progressed to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, coinciding with Egypt's star player, Mohamed Salah, receiving a rest as his team had already secured advancement.
Morocco confirmed its position in the last 16 by decisively defeating Zambia with a score of 3-0. The hosts emerged as the leaders of Group A, maintaining their trajectory to ensure that all their knockout matches will be held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, which has a capacity of nearly 70,000 and will also host the final on January 18.
Celebrations ensued for other teams as well. The outcomes in Group A, where Comoros finished in third place with two points, and Group B, where Angola similarly placed, triggered festivities elsewhere. This is due to the fact that teams accumulating more than two points and already guaranteed at least third place in their respective groups have advanced to the last 16.
The four best third-place teams from the six groups will also progress, alongside the top two teams from each group. In cases where two teams end up with the same number of points in a group, head-to-head results will serve as the primary tiebreaker.
Consequently, the 2021 champion Senegal, along with Congo and Benin (notably due to its victory over Botswana, marking its first win in the tournament), have advanced prior to their final matches in Group D. Additionally, the defending champion Ivory Coast, five-time winner Cameroon, and Mozambique (thanks to its victory against Gabon) have also secured their places from Group F. Burkina Faso and Sudan have advanced alongside the already-qualified Algeria from Group E, as both teams triumphed over Equatorial Guinea.
Angola, which possesses a superior goal difference compared to Comoros, still has a chance to advance with two points if the already-qualified Nigeria defeats Uganda and Tunisia overcomes Tanzania in Group C on Tuesday.
