After a span of seven years, Pakistan triumphed over Australia.
The Pakistan captain must have felt the pressure with the way Travis Head started the batting as soon as he came on. The Australian stand-in captain hit two sixes and two fours in his first nine balls. Chasing Pakistan's 168, Australia scored 27 runs in 2.2 overs.
However, Head's storm of an early start did not last long in the first T20I of the three-match series in Lahore. Australia lost 6 wickets before reaching 100 after being trapped by Pakistan's spin net. In the end, Pakistan won the match by 22 runs after restricting them to 146 runs.
With this victory, Pakistan ended its long winning drought against Australia. Pakistan last won in Dubai in October 2018, and has lost 7 consecutive matches since then.
Despite a good start in the chase, Australia was trapped mainly by Pakistan's spinners. Saim Ayub returned the two openers, Matthew Short and Head. Among them, Head was caught by Babar Azam for 23 runs off 13 balls and Short was bowled for 5 runs off 4 balls.
Saim took 2 wickets for 29 runs in 3 overs. However, Abrar Ahmed's 2 wickets came for just 10 runs in 4 overs. Apart from this, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz took 1 wicket each.
Apart from the four spinners, two pacers Shaheen Afridi and Salman Mirza took the ball for Pakistan. The two bowled a total of 6 overs but did not take any wickets.
After losing wickets at regular intervals, Australia's score reached 96 for 6 wickets at one point. From there, the team's run reached 146 thanks to Xavier Bartlett's unbeaten innings of 34 runs off 25 balls, who was reduced to 9.
Earlier, Pakistan, who had won the toss and elected to bat, lost Sahibzada Farhan off Bartlett's first ball, but quickly recovered from the shock. Saim and Salman added 74 runs for the second wicket and Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman added 37 runs for the fourth wicket, taking the team past 150.
Saim scored 40 runs off 22 balls with 2 sixes and 3 fours, while captain Salman scored 39 runs off 27 balls with 4 sixes and 1 four. Babar, who got out for four, scored the third-highest 24 runs with a four and a six each.
