Alcaraz-Sabalenka's dominance, Venus' history
The first Grand Slam of the year got off to a great start at Melbourne Park. The first day saw the dominance of stars, the rise of newcomers and an afternoon that touched history. World number one Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka. Both won in easy two sets. Emma Raducanu, Cameron Norrie and Frances Tiafoe won on the same day. Despite losing, 45-year-old Venus Williams stole the show.
World number one Alcaraz was in her own rhythm from the start. She started her career Grand Slam mission in a great way by defeating Australia's Adam Walton 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-2. After the match, Alcaraz said, 'It feels good to be back on the court in the new season. Walton played well, I also had to give my best. In the end, I was able to maintain my level of play, that's the satisfaction.'
The same scene in the women's singles. Aryna Sabalenka won 6-4, 6-1. But the match was not as easy as it seemed at first. 20-year-old Tiantsova Rakotomanga Rajaroa broke Sabalenka's serve early on. Even then, Sabalenka came back and won in two sets. After the match, she said, "I have never seen her play like this before. I couldn't find my rhythm at the beginning. But gradually I found my game."
In another hotly debated match of the day, Venus Williams fought against age and time. At 45, she entered the court as the oldest female player in the history of the Australian Open. In the end, she lost 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4, but the audience gave the legend a standing ovation. After the match, Venus said, "It was a great moment. The love of the audience keeps me going. I know I am improving and I will not stop."
However, Olga Danilovich's victory is no small feat. It was one of the best wins of her career for the 69th-ranked Serbian. "It was a great experience. I enjoyed playing against a legend like Venus," she said.
British star Emma Raducanu regained her confidence. She defeated Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkhao 6-4, 6-1 to reach the second round. "The start was tough. The opponent's balls were falling very close to the line. I fought, I stayed focused,
that's what worked," Raducanu said.
Another British representative, Cameron Norrie, won the men's singles in a dramatic match. After a great five-set battle against Benjamin Banzi of France, he won the game 6-0, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Norrie served 17 aces, showing his mental toughness.
The biggest surprise of the day was brought by Michael Zheng of the United States. After qualifying for the main draw for the first time, he defeated Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(0), 6-3. The 20-year-old is already being called the 'Next Big Thing'. His next opponent is Corentin Mutu. Frances Tiafoe also won easily. He defeated local player Jason Kubler 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
