Bangladesh make history by thrashing Maldives in SAFF Women's Futsal

Bangladesh has emerged as the undefeated champions after a significant victory over Maldives in the inaugural edition of the South Asian Women's Futsal Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand. The red-green representatives made history by defeating Maldives with a score of 14-2 in the sixth and final match of the round-robin league on Sunday (January 25).

In this match, which took place at Nonthaburi Hall in Bangkok, the Maldives initially took the lead; however, Sabina and Masurad's team quickly equalized. With this win, Bangladesh clinched the title by maintaining the top position in the standings with 16 points from six matches, comprising five victories and one draw. Previously, a commanding 9-1 victory against Pakistan had provided Bangladesh with a substantial advantage in the title race.

The Bangladesh team, which remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, displayed dominance from the outset. Prior to scoring 14 goals against Maldives, captain Sabina Khatun played a pivotal role in leading the team to victory against Pakistan on Friday, netting four goals. In that lopsided match against Pakistan, Nusrat Jahan also contributed with two goals, and Krishna Rani Sarkar added to the tally. Sabina took charge of the match, leading 6-0 at halftime. The title was secured with a draw in today's final match against Maldives, but Bangladesh's overwhelming victory ensured that this new edition of the trophy would be added to their collection.

Throughout their journey in the SAFF Women's Futsal, Saeed Khodrahami's team has outperformed formidable opponents such as India and Bhutan. After defeating India 3-1 in their opening match, Bangladesh managed a 3-3 draw against Bhutan.
However, in the subsequent matches, they established themselves as strong contenders by crushing Nepal 3-0, Sri Lanka 6-2 and Pakistan 9-1. After the victory over Pakistan, Sabina and her team went to the top of the seven-team table with 13 points, which increased their confidence to win the last match against Maldives.

In this new format of futsal, the Bangladeshi girls proved their capabilities at a time when they have already tasted two consecutive titles in the SAFF Women's Championship. This victory added another dimension to the excellence of women's football in South Asia.

Sabina Khatun's exceptional leadership and on-field performance throughout the tournament were key to Bangladesh's success. Winning such a prestigious title while undefeated will be an unforgettable milestone in the history of women's football in the country.
