Heroic return to the field of angry teammates
Disallowed goals, contentious penalties, altercations in the stands, skirmishes between players, missed penalty opportunities, and last-minute goal controversies – what transpired during the final of the African Cup of Nations? The drama escalated to unprecedented levels in Rabat. Nevertheless, the situation was marred by the Senegalese players exiting the field in protest against a referee's ruling. Ultimately, Senegal returned to the pitch and secured the championship, overcoming Morocco with a score of 1-0. This victory marked Senegal's second championship title on the African continent.
Four years prior, Sadio Mane was recognized as the tournament's standout player, playing a pivotal role in securing the nation's inaugural title. This time, the former Liverpool striker not only took charge on the field in reclaiming the title but also emerged as a genuine leader by upholding the spirit of the game during a tumultuous final filled with negative occurrences, ultimately guiding the team back onto the field.
Neither team managed to find the back of the net during the allotted 90 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Senegalese forward Papa Gaye netted a stunning goal from a corner kick at the onset of 8 minutes of added time. However, the referee ruled the goal out, citing a foul by the Senegalese players on a Moroccan player in the box prior to the header. Moments later, defender El Hadji Malik Diouf committed a foul on Moroccan Brahim Diaz within the Senegalese penalty area, prompting referee Jacques Ndala to award a penalty.
The Senegalese camp expressed their discontent vocally. The referee sought assistance from VAR. Nevertheless, this did not alter the decision. Subsequently, Senegalese coach Pape Bouna Thiao became enraged. He instructed his players to exit the field. Most of the Senegalese players complied with this directive. Only Sadio Mane remained on the pitch, urging his teammates to return. The match was halted for 17 minutes. Eventually, Mane led the Senegalese players back onto the field. Upon their return, Moroccan Real Madrid star Diaz prepared to take the penalty. However, during his Panenka attempt, he astonishingly passed the ball to Senegalese goalkeeper Eduardo Mendy. This marked the conclusion of regular time.
Tension escalated at the start of extra time. In the 94th minute, Papa Geyi received a through ball from Idrissa Gueye and entered the penalty area with a rapid corner shot, giving Senegal the advantage. However, the events that unfolded in the green arena of Rabat during this title clash have undoubtedly tarnished the essence of football. In the post-match press conference, Moroccan coach Walid Regragui labeled Senegal's actions as 'shameful', stating, 'It is disrespectful to Africa.'
Conversely, Senegal coach Pape Thiago did not conduct a press conference. It was canceled due to the presence of several local journalists. However, in an interview with beIN Sports, he acknowledged, 'In reality, individuals react impulsively in the heat of the moment. We should not have acted in that manner. We extend our apologies to football.' Senegalese star Sadio Mane, disheartened by the incident, remarked, 'It is absurd to abandon the game over a penalty. I would prefer to lose than to experience something like that.'
